Remote Pilot Certificate Training

Focus Air is a licensed Aviation Training Organisation (ATO Number SACAA/1174/ATO), certified by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) for Remote Pilot Certificate Training (RPC). This course will enable you to fly a Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) legally in South Africa. Our training assist and guides you through each of the required steps to obtain your license from the SACAA.

RPC (VLOS) Initial

There are 2 parts to the Remote Pilot Certificate Training:

Part 1: Theory Training

  • ⁠2 weeks of full time classroom sessions. Classes are held Monday to Friday starting from 08:30
  • All our theory lectures take place at our Flight School based in Virginia Airport, Durban North
  • Classroom sessions will expose students to the following subjects and via lectures and practical workshops:
    1. Air Law
    2. Human Factors
    3. Multi Rotor Technical and Principles of Flight
    4. Meteorology
    5. Flight Planning and Navigation
    6. Restricted Radio
  • All exams to be written in our SACAA Accredited Examination Centre

In addition to the theory exams, students will be required to complete:

  • ⁠Restricted Radio License training (theory and practical included in above)
  • ⁠English Language Proficiency, which includes an oral interview with examiner (exemption might be available for some tertiary degrees or English first language).

Phase 2: Practical One to One Flight Training

  • ⁠Once all written exams are successfully completed, students progress to the practical course component.
  • ⁠Lessons consist of practical flying instruction outdoors. These are scheduled to assess students skill levels and improve flying ability
  • The duration of the practical component depends on a student's skills and experience.
  • ⁠Once assessed, students proceed to further flight training and are required to undergo a practical flight examination or sign our with the DUE (Designated Unmanned Aircraft System Examiner) as prescribed by the SACAA.
  • ⁠Please allow a minimum of 4 - 8 weeks to complete your practical training sessions
